Observatory: Painter Hall 9" Refractor

Painter Hall 9" Refractor:

Painter Hall 9 Inch Refractor TelescopeThis telescope, located on the University of Texas at Austin Campus in Painter Hall, was built by the Warner and Swasey Company of Cleveland in the 1930's. The telescope was designed around the lens which was ground by the John A. Brashear Company before the turn of the 20th century. The clock drive on this telescope is powered by a weight/gear system much like that of a grandfather clock which needs to be re-wound hourly. The dome is also mechanical and is driven by a system of pullies connected to a crank.

Opening Procedures:

1. Log into the Observation Log Book located on the table on the west side of the observatory. Notate the date and the number of people in your party.

2. Check that the previous user's closing duties were completed and take note of any damages or uncompleted procedures.

3. Step over to the east side of the observatory and open the dome. Start by unlocking the door clasp by pulling the small rope until you hear a click. Pull the right side of the large rope loop and slowly open the door until it is fully opened. Tie the door pulley loop rope into the wheel located under the dome door, making sure it will be out of the way of any objects while the dome is turning.

The Declination Wheel on the Painter Hall 9 Inch Refractor Telescope4. Uncapping the Telescope:

  • Start by locating the R.A. and Dec knobs at the eye peice end of the telescope. R.A. is the knob on the left and Dec. is the knob on the right.
  • Unlock R.A. by twisting the knob in a counter clockwise rotation approx. 2 times.
  • Use the captains wheel located on the base of the telescope to rotate the R.A. over to approx. 45 degrees.
  • Lock R.A. by twisting the knob in a clockwise rotation until it stops.
  • Unlock Dec. by twisting the knob in a counter clockwise rotation approx. 2 times.
  • Push the eye peice end of the Telescope up so that the front end comes down.
  • Have a friend remove the lens cover from the front of the telescope, being careful not to touch the lens. Place the lens cap in a location out of the way.
  • Push the lens end of the Telescope up so that the back end comes down.
  • Lock Dec. by twisting the knob in a clockwise rotation until it stops.
  • Unlock R.A. by twisting the knob in a counter clockwise rotation approx. 2 times.
  • Use the captains wheel located on the base of the telescope to rotate the R.A. back to 90 degrees (resting position).
  • Lock R.A. by twisting the knob in a clockwise rotation until it stops.

5. You are now ready to calibrate the R.A. using the brightest star in the sky.
